First semester O-Chem was awesome! My prof rocked! Second semester...ummmm, not so much. The dude was this German guy who would write the mechanisms with his right hand and follow behind with an eraser in his left hand. The weenie! he also had this uncanny ability to remember every person's name and face in the lecture hall. I really prefer to remain anonymous in lecture situations like that. Ahh, the joy...

I hated stats as an undergrad but like them now as a grad student...go figure. I think I found the story in the numbers. Pretty cool when you're writing up your research.

Econ...took it, you can have it. Bleh!

Are there some arrogant scientists? Sure. Deceitful? A handful. The majority of scientists go into research because of a passion for the subject. You're very right that many of us would work for just the amount of money to run the experiments and live a frugal life. Academia is not where the money lies. Overall we are not rich. Politics... the only time I really care is when the grant funding for important work dries up. If my research is shown to be flawed and my conclusions not robust, I want to know so I can dig deeper. This is true for all the scientists I know.
